Isa & Shein contacted us some time ago to shoot their merisik ceremony, and straight off the bat it piqued our interest because we hadn’t heard of it before. During our meet up, they explained to us that the merisik ceremony is a very traditional Malay custom where the parents of the groom formally propose to the parents of the bride that their son has an interest in marrying their daughter, acceptance by parents of the bride and the bride herself, followed by exchange of betrothal gifts.
It was definitely an eye-opener for us to experience Malay culture this way – we had a great time learning and watching Malay customs, and a good laugh when both sets of mothers pretended that their children had never met each other before. The event was held at Laman Tarian Azanin (which is actually owned by Shein’s mum – a noted international drama theatre dancer), a treasure trove of different species of Heliconia and greenery.
Congratulations once again Isa & Shein!
